Game 1(not counting the SLU exhibition) is in the books, with the Cardinals beating up on the Mets 7 – 0.
Notes:
* Anthony Reyes continued to impress so far this spring, pitching 3 scoreless innings, striking out 2 and allowing 2 hits. The 2 hits were described as pitches up in the zone, but overall, he seemed to impress with his fastball at 90 – 91, and his command intact. I feel this is the most significant stat from yesterday: Reyes did not walk a batter in 3 innings.
Tony LaRussa on Reyes: “Pitched with a real good tempo…”
“When he’s pitched well, a lot of it has to do with controlling his delivery.” ~ STLTODAY
* Colby Rasmus has reached base in all 6 of his plate appearences thus far, and pinch ran for Albert Pujols yesterday ~ STLTODAY
You can find the game recap and the rest of the stats on the Cardinals official site by clicking here.
* In other notes, Joel Pinero will miss his scheduled start Sunday due to tightness in his shoulder. This is described as “Very Minor” by team doctors. Pinero’s abscence opens the door for Kyle McCllelan to take the ball. I like McCllelan (or at least what I’ve heard about him), and he’s impressed the coaching staff to this point. It’s also fun to root for a local boy.
McClellan struck out 54 hitters in 592⁄3 innings last summer and had a 1.81 ERA ~ STLTODAY
